How to Steam Treat Your Adult Acne

Did you know steam can be used to treat acne-prone skin? It’s true – there are advantages to using steam treatment for the purposes of acne eradication. Of course there are also some disadvantages so it is important to understand more about this type of adult acne treatment before trying it for yourself.

When using steam for acne, you can use one of two methods. A traditional steam room or sauna can be used, which can be good for people with body acne. The second and easiest way is the home facial steam for acne occurring only on the face. Read on to learn more about these types of adult acne treatments:

Using a Sauna or Steam Room

When using a sauna or steam room to treat your acne, first consult your physician to make sure it is safe. There are some people who should not use this method such as pregnant women and people taking certain medications or who have certain medical conditions. Once you’ve gotten the approval of your doctor, you can take advantage of the soothing steam.

The purpose of a sauna or steam room is to rid the body of toxins while soothing it. Some even believe using steam heat may boost the immune system. The steam opens pores, encourages cleansing and perspiration, and increases circulation. After taking your steam treatment for acne it is advised you shower in cool water to close your pores. Make sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate yourself after taking a steam or sauna.

There are also facial professionals such as dermatologists and estheticians who specialize in giving targeted steam treatments in a clinical or day spa environment.

Home Facial Steaming

You can make your own day spa environment right at home with a facial steaming session. The method of steaming your facial adult acne at home is easy to do and requires very little. You need a bowl (this can be a sink bowl if you like) filled with steaming hot water and a sheet or large towel. For safety reasons, never use anything plastic as this could cause suffocation. It is very important the fabric is breathable but not too thin.

Position your face several inches above the water and cover your head with the towel, trapping the steam. Aim for five minutes at first, setting a timer is a good idea. If you haven’t had negative reactions to the steam after five minutes you can do another five for a total of 10 minutes of facial steaming. Afterwards use cool water and a toner such as witch hazel to complete the treatment.

There are usually very few negative side effects of steam for adult acne treatments, however some people may find that steam makes their problems worse. If this is the case, consider making an appointment with your dermatologist for skin evaluation
